Service and Volunteering
Beach Clean Up
Our team volunteered to help keep clean up trash on Assateague beach. Oyster Recovery The team assisted in the Perdue Oyster Recovery, a community program to help with Chesapeake bay cleanup. They collect oyster shells and deposit them back into the bay to help increase the oyster population in the bay. FIRST Lego League Throughout the year, the team participated in multiple FLL events. The team met with younger students to teach them the basics of robotics and the benefits of joining the robotics team in high school by showing off the robots and allowing the kids to ask questions. In addition, the team helped host multiple FLL events in the area. The experience has the team closely linked with the local robotics community and helps recruit future members HALO We assisted in the HALO soup kitchen where we cooked some food and fed the homeless people who visited. We also went to their warehouse where we cleaned toys, organized the warehouse itself, and brought new items to the thrift stores. Salisbury University 5k Zombie Walk The team assisted in the set up in the operation of Salisbury University's 5k zombie walk to raise money for United Way. Wicomico Day School The team assisted the staff at the Wicomico Day School's STEM nights for their elementary and middle school students, applying what the students have learned in school, and have members of the team share their knowledge of the engineering design process. |
Mentoring & Outreach
VEX IQ
The team, Hyper Tech, with Tec as a homage to the support and assistance provided by our very own Tec Tigers, managed to qualify for the State competition in their rookie year by winning the Design award at a qualifying VEX IQ competition. This inspiring achievement has led to the commitment of Hyper Tec members to pursue a career in a STEM field as well as to future membership in the TEC Tigers. As team Hyper Tec develops, it is based on the number of middle schoolers expressing interest in these new and fascinating opportunities. We are very excited about what the future holds for our new VEX IQ team and wish them a hugely successful second season. NASA Girl Powered (October 2018) The girls from the team helped to educate local girls interested in the engineering design process and robotics. VEX IQ kits were used in the process as our team members taught the girls important skills needed in the field; such as programming, design, mechanics, and CADD. Sea Pearch (July 2018) our team members volunteered this summer to assist middle school campers in the building of SeaPerch robots in conjunction with the red doors summer camp. Ward Museum Outreach (March 2019) Our team was asked to make an appearance at the Ward Museum during the Parkside CTE presentation to not only make our presence there known in our community, but to reach out as well to local businesses. We had all our teams present and all the robots functioning, and even allowed some of the guests to drive them around and play catch with them. |
